Laptop – Bluetooth – GPRS/UMTS – Internet
Connecting a Laptop to the Internet via a Bluetooth enbaled GPRS/UMTS Mobile Phone

This page shows how to connect a Laptop to the Internet via a Bluetooth enabled GPRS/UMTS Mobile Phone. The only reason why a PDA with integrated phone has been used instead of a normal bluetooth enabled mobile phone is that with a PDA it is much easier to make screen dumps.
1. Connect the laptop to the phone set via Bluetooth
- Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on both devices (the laptop and the phone set).
- On the laptop select “Start/Settings/Control Panel/Bluetooth Devices”

and press the button “Add”.
- Make sure your laptop is “visible” by selecting “My Device is set up and ready to be found”

and press the button “Next”.
- Wait for the system to look for and find your Bluetooth phone.
If everything goes well, you should see your phone as new device.
Select your phone and press the button “Next”.
- Enter a passkey you have chosen to pair your laptop with your phone

and press the button “Next”.
- You should now get a notification on your phone asking you if you want to add your laptop to the devices list of your phone.

Answer “Yes”.
- Enter on your phone the same passkey you choose in point 5

and press “Next” or whatever other control you need to use to have the passkey you entered accepted by your phone.
- If everything goes well, you’ll get a confirmation from both the laptop and your phone that the connection/pairing between the two devices has been established.

If you reached this point, you’ve successfully connected the laptop to the Bluetooth enabled phone. But now it is time to get connected to the Internet.
2. Creating a new connection to the Internet
- Select “Settings/Control Panel/Network Connections/Create a new connection”

and press the button “Next”.
- Select “Connect to the Internet”

and press the button “Next”.
- Select “Set up my connection manually”

and press the button “Next”.
- Select “Connect using a dial-up modem”

and press the button “Next”.
- Select the modem corresponding to the Bluetooth enabled device you just connected

and press the button “Next”.
- Enter the connection name (e.g. “GPRS”)

and press the button “Next”.
- Enter “*99#” as the phone number to be used for the connection. Pay attention: the standard code “*99#” means: connect to the default GPRS (or UMTS) connection offered by your service provider.

And press the button “Next”.
- Enter your “Internet account information” (your normal userid and password are OK)

and press the button “Next”.
- Complete the “New Connection Wizard”

by pressing the button “Finish”.
If you made this far, you’ve almost done it!
3. Finally connecting to the Internet
- Right click on the icon “My Network Places” and select “Properties”, you should see a list of all available connections.
- Select the connection you’ve just create (i.e. “GPRS”), you should get a dialog like the folowing:

Press the button “Dial” and…
…and Happy Browsing!
What a fantastic find. I had to search the web for an hour to find the full information about how to pair, passkeys etc. Many thanks for this great bit of info that finally enabled me to download music for a ring tone!
