Connecting a Laptop to the Internet via a Bluetooth enbaled GPRS/UMTS Mobile Phone

This page shows how to connect a Laptop to the Internet via a Bluetooth enabled GPRS/UMTS Mobile Phone. The only reason why a PDA with integrated phone has been used instead of a normal bluetooth enabled mobile phone is that with a PDA it is much easier to make screen dumps.

1. Connect the laptop to the phone set via Bluetooth

  1. Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on both devices (the laptop and the phone set).
  2. On the laptop select “Start/Settings/Control Panel/Bluetooth Devices”

    Adding a Bluetooth device

    and press the button “Add”.

  3. Make sure your laptop is “visible” by selecting “My Device is set up and ready to be found”

My device is ready to be found

    and press the button “Next”.

  4. Wait for the system to look for and find your Bluetooth phone.
If everything goes well, you should see your phone as new device.

    New device found

Select your phone and press the button “Next”.

  5. Enter a passkey you have chosen to pair your laptop with your phone

    Enter a passkey

    and press the button “Next”.

  6. You should now get a notification on your phone asking you if you want to add your laptop to the devices list of your phone.

Add laptop to the phone's devices list

    Answer “Yes”.

  7. Enter on your phone the same passkey you choose in point 5

Enter the passkey on your phone

and press “Next” or whatever other control you need to use to have the passkey you entered accepted by your phone.

  8. If everything goes well, you’ll get a confirmation from both the laptop and your phone that the connection/pairing between the two devices has been established.

  6. Enter the connection name (e.g. “GPRS”)

    Enter connection name

    and press the button “Next”.

  7. Enter “*99#” as the phone number to be used for the connection. Pay attention: the standard code “*99#” means: connect to the default GPRS (or UMTS) connection offered by your service provider.

    And press the button “Next”.
